I was about the same age as your son when I was diagnosed. I, too, went through a short "wait and see" phase. It makes sense, I suppose, because sometimes it heals on its own. I don't know anything about "building a shelf", but the surgery can be traumatic for a child (it was for me). Just make sure your son gets lots of love and knows that you're there for him.
: My 4 yr. old son was diagnosed w/ Perthes in December and the orthopedist put him on "light" activity for two months to see if the deterioration progresses or stops. If it doesn't help and the bone has deteriorated more, he suggests surgery including "building a shelf" on the hip to protect the joint until blood flow is restored. Has anyone experienced this surgery? success?
