I'm no doctor but I hate to see the "wait and see" method used. By the time any damage is done (and it doesn't take long) to the hip then surgery will be your only option. I would really check out some alternatives, just buying crutches yourself I don't know if that would be enough. I myself used crutches from 5 yrs old but also wore what is called the "Perthes sling".
Hopefully you can get more info up there.
